Trail Overview
Length: One-way mileage is 6.8 miles from the trailhead to Bright Angel Campground.
Elevation: 7,250 feet (trailhead) to 2,450 feet (Colorado River). Total elevation net loss/gain is 4,800 feet.
Hiking Time: Usually three to five hours going down and double that time to come up.
Difficulty: Very strenuous, no water, no shade. Trail is much steeper than Bright Angel Trail due to its shorter length.
Views: Spectacular viewsâmost trails follow side canyon drainages while the South Kaibab follows open ridges, providing some of the prettiest panoramic views in the park.
